About this artwork
From a series of works inspired by black and white photos from the 1950s of the mining island of Hashima in Japan, the most densely populated and polluted place at the time when the island and its inhabitants were exploited on behalf of Toyota.
This landscape serves my purpose of a world where man has not been able to adapt and is on the verge of his own disappearance, as could be the case if James Lovelock's "Gaia" hypothesis were to prove true.… In this theory, the earth is an organism capable of self-regulation. If one of its elements malfunctions, it is eliminated from the system that will continue without it. In my paintings in general, and in this series in particular, the world has decided to continue without man. Those who remain wander here and there among their ruins, in a world that has become foreign to them and that will continue better without them. The universe without man.
