About this artwork
This work is an archaeological journey into the artist's inner self. Hidden in the deepest layers of the canvas are colors representing the most immediate and vulnerable emotions. Yet the painting process became an act of self-protection: these emotional layers were deliberately superimposed and masked until they were completely hidden from the viewer's eye. The subsequent attempt at uncovering them—the physical scraping away of the upper layers—leaves… a deeply furrowed, wounded surface texture. Despite this rough treatment, the original colors remain invisible. What remains is the scarring of the process: a texture that speaks of the attempt to rediscover the inner self, while simultaneously bearing witness to the ultimate loss of visibility.
Carsten Dülfer is a self-taught painter who has worked for almost 30 years without formal training. His technique is dynamic and expressionistic, characterized by impulsive application of paint, fluid transitions, and the deliberate avoidance of preliminary sketches. With luminous layers of color and an uncompromising depiction of his own feelings, he creates authentic works that convey pure emotion, spontaneity, and vibrant energy.
