About this artwork
This painting is part of a series in which Casper Verborg establishes multiple sources. Photographs taken in his hometown The Hague, images from the newspaper and inspiration from everyday life are combined in an appealing and disturbing painting. Compared to other recent works, the background of this specific canvas gained prominence—more explicitly present yet more abstract, and thus more universal.
Verborg’s handling of color perfectly matches… the ambiguity of the image. He has developed an idiosyncratic palette with characteristic colors in unexpected combinations. Cheerful at first sight, but at second thought more alarming, toxic even—like that irresistible piece of candy that is actually of chemical substance. The painted figures, facing up to sublime and threatening nature, are as anonymous as recognizable. Transcending the individual, they do not stand for themselves but humanity.
