This painting is part of a series in which Casper Verborg establishes multiple sources. Photographs taken in his hometown The Hague, images from the newspaper and inspiration from everyday life are combined in an appealing and disturbing painting.
Verborg’s handling of color perfectly matches the ambiguity of the image. The image can be read as interior or exterior, but also as forest, architecture, or oil stain. The painted figures, facing up to… sublime and threatening nature, are as anonymous as recognizable. Transcending the individual, they do not stand for themselves but humanity.
The title refers to the actual beach in The Hague, where Verborg made photo's and sketches for this painting, but also to the dystopian novel 'on the beach' by Nevil Shute.

Casper Verborg is a Dutch painter, whose figurative works centre on storytelling and exploring the intricacies of the human condition. A graduate of KASK School of Arts in Ghent and ArtEZ in Arnhem, Verborg is currently living and working in the Netherlands.
