About this artwork
This painting was loosely based on a painting of an Unknown master of the 16th century, depicting the temptation of St. Antony. The medieval visual language, with its religious scenes, fabulous beings, dreams and morals, are the inspiration for this and some other paintings. Based on this imagery, Verborg made a collage where this visual language was translated into our world. The background for example, is derived from pictures of the destroyed…
cities in Syria. The figures in the painting are a combination of diverse sources such as eastern European folkore, pictures from the newspaper (about the harsh reality of the refugee crisis). By combining all these sources into one painting, Casper tries to establish an associative reality that is rooted in our time and transcends it at the same time.
