In this oil painting on canvas, Catalina places us in a desert landscape rendered in a warm atmosphere, where oranges, ochres, and browns predominate, but one element stands out. Despite being a simple space with specific vegetation, a human figure atop the cacti breaks the narrative and reveals that we are looking at yet another of her Botanical Beings.
The plant motif comes to life not only formally, but also symbolically. Catalina uses the cactus… as an emblem of survival, resilience, and care for one's own territory. Its thorns not only protect: they define boundaries, contain, and propose another way of inhabiting the land. In this gesture, the natural and the artificial do not clash, but rather engage in dialogue; the mask and snorkel merge with nature, giving rise to new desires and previously unimaginable challenges.
