About this artwork
When I first arrived in France, the beautiful botanical gardens and parks seemed natural and free. Later, I discovered that the plants in the garden were not indigenous but had been brought in from various continents in the late-nineteenth century. They were trophies of the empire that 'plant hunters' had removed from colonised lands. It was a competitive fad among the nobility to display them in glasshouses.
Learning this historical background,… I became interested in the process of the new arrival that blurs that original boundaries and expands the frontiers. The deracinated plants from different continents were transplanted right next to the indigenous species, but they thrived and blossomed nevertheless. They reminded me of the lives of migrants who both adapt to and transform new societies. Whether they break, prosper, intertwine, or fade away, these foreign beings flow into the status quo, cause chaos, and create a new scene at the end.
