About this artwork
Tectonic Calm explores tension held beneath an apparently quiet surface. A low, restrained horizon anchors the composition, while layered textures and incised marks below suggest shifting structures, submerged forms, or geological fault lines.
Cool blue and slate tones dominate the surface, softened by abrasion and subtle colour variation. The paint is worked back and forth, allowing traces of process—scraping, pressing, and erasure—to remain visible.… These marks create depth and movement without overt gesture, giving the work a sense of weight and endurance.
Balancing abstraction with landscape suggestion, this painting invites contemplation rather than narrative. It reflects on the idea of calm not as absence of force, but as something held in balance—quiet, compressed, and enduring.
My work moves steadily toward a single subject: light. Over the years my paintings have travelled from the faceted, constructed forms of my early figurative work into something far more open — luminous atmospheres in which colour, rather than line, carries the feeling. My collections trace that journey. The cubist intimacy of Eternal Facets gives way to the gestural turbulence of Light and Pressure, where gold breaks through dark, pressing masses. In Just a Little Longer, drifting moons and supernatural violets hold onto the last of the day, while Quiet Light grounds the work in disciplined seascape and cloud study. Atmospheric Horizons lets those horizons soften and dissolve, and Luminous Cores arrives at pure abstraction — each canvas organised around a glowing centre of warmth.
