About this artwork
In this small painting, 30 x 30 cm, I am less concerned with representing a river or a waterfall than with conveying the presence of water itself. The icy, moving water becomes an almost internal motif: not a described landscape, but a surfacing sensation. The brushstrokes remain spontaneous, rapid, driven by the breath of the gesture rather than by a desire to freeze reality.
The format is intimate, yet the painting possesses a particular strength,… like a restrained brilliance. The variations in texture and the fresh nuances allow the vibration of the current to be perceived, without ever veering towards hyperrealism. This theme of water, recurring since my beginnings, remains for me an essential area of exploration, a space where light, fluidity, and life converge in the moment of painting.

Charles Belle is a painter whose work is distinguished by a poetic and powerful exploration of nature, often deployed in monumental formats. Starting from reality, the artist goes beyond it to reach the very essence of life. For him, nature is not a subject: it is a state, an energy, a passage towards abstraction.
This is reflected in the film “Beyond the Silences”, the result of 16 years of filming in his studio (official JIFA24 selection – Louvre Museum).
In 2023, seven French museums joined forces to present the first major retrospective dedicated to Charles Belle, bringing together more than 1,600 works and offering a cross-sectional view of his career.
Present at the biggest contemporary art fairs — Art Basel, Art Basel Miami, FIAC, Art Brussels, Art Paris, Art on Paper Brussels and FAB Paris — Charles Belle has also been a founding member of the Art Identification Standard (AIS) consortium since 2019.
