Daniel Stringer was one of Reynolds's first students at the Royal Academy Schools in the late eighteenth century. He didn't leave behind very much; recognised as an extremely promising student, he returned from London to his native Chester and found it impossible to get the kind of commissions for which his training and ambitions had prepared him, and he sank into a drunken decline, according to William Hazlitt, the English commentator of the time.…
