About this artwork
On the train home with our young teenagers, a man sat on the seats with us. He was a big sort of man, with a heavy face and a thick body, but signs became clearer as the journey went on that our initial impression was wrong (we talked about it when we got home, and we all thought the same). He had rainbow shoelaces, and his nails were painted black and his hair, which was receding, was still cut in a bob, with strands loose across his face. Our perceptions…
were all awry. He was a she, or perhaps a they. When you look at a portrait it's almost the first thing you think of, isn't it? Man or woman?
