About this artwork
In the painting, a female figure is huddled inside a narrow, box-like space. Her body supports the ceiling of the container with her arms, as if to prevent it from collapsing. All around, soft, brightly colored cushions enhance the confined space.
But that apparent softness is deceptive. The highly symbolic work plays with the paradox of the comfort zone: a place we've built to feel safe, protected, surrounded by what we know—and which, precisely… for this reason, often turns into an invisible prison. A refuge that shelters us, but limits us, immobilizes us.
The woman's face, turned upward, is charged with ambivalence: perhaps resignation, perhaps a desire to escape. Fearing risk and the unknown, she chooses safety even when it becomes suffocating.
Chiara Silvano is a painter who, after international studies in London, Nantes, and Venice, explores oil painting enriched with fabrics, embroidery, and threads, lending three-dimensionality and depth to her works. Her style draws from the naive, brimming with rapid gestures and intense colors, while embroidery adds meditative depth and meaning. Her works celebrate suspended emotional states, intertwining lightness and restlessness, conveying to the viewer a sense of rebirth and the irresistible urgency of feeling.
