About this artwork
On my world cycle tour I always make sure I have several sketchbooks. Sometimes simply to make notes or very quick sketches and at times longer finished drawings that I can frame later. So it is with this drawing done during a bicycle ride at night pausing to look at the crescent Moon and enjoying the still night as I drew the crescent Moon. The initial drawing was done quite quickly and finished over a couple of hours the following day using graphite…
pencil and tissue paper and fine wet and dry sandpaper. Astronomy is an important source of inspiration for my work. I have built my own observatory and will observe the night sky as often as possible. I love to learn the constellations and the names of the stars the mythological stories behind the naming is fascinating as is how these names are carried with us into the future to inform and remind us of our past and the changing world views emerging through greater knowledge and understanding.

Chris Hankey is an established British painter whose works have featured in prizes, exhibitions and publications throughout the UK, Ireland, Australia and USA. Starting each work by cycling to explore local landscapes, with a sketch pad packed and inspiration at every turn, he composes luminous landscapes and seascapes that capture the profound connection between consciousness and nature. He harnesses an impasto, expressionistic approach to build textured layers before finishing with glazes to achieve a glowing diffusion of light.
