About this artwork
An early morning scene in summertime on the edge of the river Teign in south Devon. The White of the swan echoes the white of the girls gown. the shingle under the shallow water likewise compliments the dots on the figures clothing. The strong tonal contrast of the water against the various hues found in the whites is key to this painting along with the verticality of the composition.

« I am always trying to discover what the painting is about, the object matter is not the subject matter. »
Chris Macauley believes that a painting should work on a purely visual and descriptive level. The UK-based artist’s painterly and abstract works portray landscapes, as well as the figurative. When creating, Macauley tries to balance control with accidents. He isn’t interested in the realistic copying of his subject matter. Instead, and through color, his compositions radiate an ‘inner glow’.
