About this artwork
The tidal estuary in Devon looking towards the village of Combeinteignhead, hidden by the rolling hills. The tree is growing out of old ruins, looking slightly incongruous and enigmatic. The artist paddled from the other side of the bank where he holidays with his family and many paintings in this series were painted there

« I am always trying to discover what the painting is about, the object matter is not the subject matter. »
Chris Macauley believes that a painting should work on a purely visual and descriptive level. The UK-based artist’s painterly and abstract works portray landscapes, as well as the figurative. When creating, Macauley tries to balance control with accidents. He isn’t interested in the realistic copying of his subject matter. Instead, and through color, his compositions radiate an ‘inner glow’.
