About this artwork
Although not part of the Bussow abstract series, I turned it into an abstract painting as a result of my experience with the Bussow paintings. This originally started life as a figurative oil painting of two women sun bathing in the nude on a sandy estuary bank, hidden from view by tall grasses and in the distance a hunting party giving rise to its working title “Duck shoot”. I didn’t feel that the painting was working so changed the background into…
a small sandy cove shielded by rocks. Again the painting refused to progress so I decided to overpaint it with acrylics in random curved strokes and blocks of colour, wet on wet with water sprayed on to create runs and soften edges. A little of the girls is just about discernible, hence the title “Girls within”
