About this artwork
White, to scale.
At first glance, the work appears monochromatic: an almost white field that is perceived differently depending on the light, distance, and time of day. As one approaches, the surface opens up: vertical sequences of markings, built up layer by layer, a horizon line emerging in the upper third, and color gradients between warm and cool, which the eye constantly reinterprets, become visible. The repetition of gestures here is structural,… not decorative. What appears from a distance as restraint reveals, upon closer inspection, a density; it is the accumulated decisions about where color ends up, how much is used, and when to stop.
“240326” is part of my ongoing investigation into what a monochrome surface can contain. At this scale, the viewer is more within the field that the work creates than observing it.
