About this artwork
Krakow shortly after the opening to the West. A colleague had organized a group trip by train. We drove through industrial ruins, landscapes, LPG lands. Garbage, scrap, ruins - but in Krakow everything was different. A wonderful city, lovingly cared for by its residents, full of art. Pcasso in the restaurant, Goya portraits in the university stairwell. From a western perspective, millions worth of goods in public spaces. We were probably the last…
people to see it. An enclave of classic bourgeois society had been preserved under socialism. The tour guide said it was the Paris of the East, back then without cars.
Melancholy and exhaustion, but at the same time a spirit of optimism, permeated the city. After this trip, I painted pictures of Krakow for years, as if I were possessed.
