About this artwork
My study trip to Provence took me to the banks of the Verdon one evening. I looked out over the water, lost in thought. Flashes of light caught my attention. They flickered over dark green. A fisherman, a fly fisherman, let his bait whiz across the surface of the water. The image came to me in a dream. At home, I couldn't get it out of my head, so I painted a watercolor. How was the fisherman standing there? What did the surface of the water look…
like? Photos were supposed to bring clarity. But none of that was visible on them. Instead, there was a gray-brown, torn surface, an unspeakably clumsy person, no flashes of light, no green. But I insist - I saw it. The camera was blind. So I painted it.
