About this artwork
A powerful blue figure stands with its legs wide apart above the raging sea, adorned with the insignia of various currencies: dollar, euro, and pound – and gazes resolutely out. Sharks bearing various currency symbols swim in the sea, watching the scene like glittering sentinels. Three red figures swim one behind the other, holding onto each other's arms and legs, always intent on finding the hoard of golden coins. Red stars streak through the water… as if marking the path to the treasure.
A blue figure slowly raises a hand, as if to calm the sea. The sharks continue to swim, but instead of bringing danger, they bring order to the hustle and bustle: They seem to act as guardians of the treasure, only allowing the three red seekers to pass if they demonstrate courage, cooperation, and trust. Wealth means more than gold—it means community, solidarity, and the courage to find more together than one could ever achieve alone.
Christoph Mandera, inspired by his Catholic childhood and the aesthetics of religious church windows, is a painter in the classical sense. His works feature pure, unmixed colors, expressively defined by black lines, and fill the picture surfaces and edges with diverse symbols, figures, and comic-like elements – a pop-like effect. He dynamically stages landscapes, symbols, and everyday heroes. His consistently optimistic art reflects the facets of life and touches the viewer with a blend of drama, comedy, longing, and hope.
