Southwold Beach is a small oil study on gesso panel, 8 x 8 inches (approx 20 x 20cm).
The viewer is looking directly out to sea from the standpoint of the beach towards a breaking wave.
Inspired by visits to the Suffolk coast town of Southwold, Christopher Witchall continues his preoccupation with the light, movement and colours of the ocean, a movement frozen in time between the ancient past and an endless future.
The artist’s unsentimental approach… to his subjects combine two great passions - a love of traditional painting techniques and a fascination with the photographic image. The result of this are paintings that are both painterly and highly realistic.
Southwold Beach is painted on a deep edge cradled gesso panel, so there is no need for framing and is ready to hang. It is signed on the back and supplied with a signed Certificate of Authenticity.

Christopher Witchall is an artist based in the United Kingdom whose paintings have been featured in both solo and group exhibitions nationally. He describes his art as being "how the world appears" without embellishment. Witchall eschews the picturesque of the every day, the overlooked, and mundane, and searches for beauty within the most minute of details. His realistic landscapes, seascapes, as well as urban and suburban landscapes are painted using oils on canvas or synthetic board.
