About this artwork
Emily is part of the LEGO series, which was inspired by the styles of Frank Auerbach (who explored figurative abstraction/abstract figuration) and Shin Kwangho (who pioneered semi-absract and expressionistic paintings). Both employed extremely heavy impasto and layering to arrive at their final results.
It is in part an investigation of form and color, through the use of pointillist dots of colors and their relationships. The colors are mostly… straight out of the tube, but it is the warm-and-cool relationship or temperature, contrast or value, saturation, and the distribution of colors that provide depth to the image.
It is also an investigation of abstraction versus representation - how a figure is "abstracted" into a semi-abstract image of dots.
