About this artwork
For the series Kae I was inspired by the Japanese dancer Kae Ishimoto. I used the beautiful wooden parts of an old desk as a base.
I met Kae at the Fresh Winds 2015-16 festival. With her way of dancing you could feel how she felt torn between the desire to dance, her tradition (daughter and granddaughter of a Japanese dancer) and the discovery of something new, something that comes from within.
With this series, I come back to the theme of identity… formed by things new and old, and how it is sometimes difficult to see that the things we believe we have freed ourselves from are completely ingrained in ourselves are.

In 1970, the painter Clara Joris was born in Málaga, Spain. She studied Fine Art with a focus on painting in Madrid and has been living and working in Berlin since 1998. In her work she examines the interactions between memory, consciousness and social and human heritage in the determination of our identity.
