About this artwork
This artwork uses the delicacy that results from the process of copper etching to create a precious image that has then been altered by overpainting with spray paint and gouache. One of the current tragedies of our culture is that so many people do not consider the slow ruination of the natural world to be much of a loss. The artworks in this series are visualizations of the many kinds of transformations that we are carrying out upon the natural…
world.

« I want to make a painting that conveys how beautiful our world is. I want to make a painting that conveys how broken our world is. I want them to be the same painting. »
Clayton Merrell is an award-winning American artist whose works have been widely exhibited on a national level, as well as in Cyprus, and Cuba. The painter, draftsman, and printmaker's landscapes present viewers with images in which harmony is complicated by conflict, and order is threatened by chaos. Within the comfortable imagery of earth and sky, Merrell introduces spatial and visual ruptures to create instability.
