Behind him to his left is a red ladder leaning against the edge of the pool. As soon as the viewer follows the steps up with his gaze, he realizes that he has been deceived: the pool is not empty, but on the contrary full of water. You think you are looking at a surface of water…
from below, and the boy is not sitting in an empty pool, but appears to be under water. Despite the realistically painted depiction, it is not a real situation but a dreamlike situation.
