The Goodyear blimp-port was visible from the 405 freeway in Los Angeles. I passed by there frequently. It was windy the day when I went there specifically to photograph the airship. A little while after I started shooting, the blimp, which was tethered to a pole shifted like a giant weather vane. Suddenly, I found myself taking pictures of the other side of the dirigible. Back in the studio, when I started to compose the scene it became obvious…
that I had not one but TWO Goodyear Blimps. Other happy accidents include the pilot preparing to take a picture of the lucky family getting ready to take a ride in the sky. All of the bold Goodyear advertising art included in the scene almost makes it a piece of pop art. The large size of the picture makes it an epic statement about this iconic piece of Americana.
