« Archetypal Expressionism lies between the two major paradigms of contemporary art, the figurative and the abstract. It represents the spiritual quest for common cultural roots, beyond the tragic accidents of history. »
Constantin Severin is a Romanian artist and the theorist behind Archetypal Expressionism, an artistic movement which looks to explore the ancient and the eternal through collective memory. Working primarily in oils, Severin creates atemporal narratives using cultural, utilitarian and sacred archetypes, along with the color palette of the Expressionist masters. For Severin, archetypes are essential to art: having been used for thousands of years, they have a privileged position in our inner life and rouse a special emotional response in each human being.
