About this artwork
In my work, painted in oil and inspired by ancient agro-pastoral and rural rites, I wanted to capture the vibrant and mysterious essence of a traditional Sardinian village festival. The bright colors and masked expressions convey a sense of fear. The “merdule” wears a human mask, the name (it is only a hypothesis) is supposed to have Nuragic origins: mere = master and ule = ox; therefore master of the ox.
“Sos boes” wear the bull mask; the figure of the bull, a symbol of vital force, is always present in the civilization of the entire Mediterranean basin, "su buoys" represents the animal that rebels against its owner.
