About this artwork
I was very impressed with Schopenhauer's "World as Will and Representation." I am very much in agreement with the statements he describes about the will to make up this world, and I am very impressed by his story that Platonic ideology mediates between the world and the will. I reinterpreted Schopenhauer's portrait with a sense of contemporary art. First, I painted acrylic color on the sketch, dyed the string with acrylic paint, cut it into small…
pieces, and stuck it on the canvas. The life Schopenhauer described was pain itself, but thanks to that pain, we can see through the Mayan veil that leads to individualization, and look at the world and others with compassion and sympathy. I think life is paradoxically a beautiful thing. Life moves between constant pain and boredom, but I think it's beautiful because life is finite after all.
I highly recommend this work to those who like Schopenhauer.

Daesun Choi is an artist based in South Korea whose paintings have been widely exhibited nationally, as well as in Japan, the United States, and Germany. His most recent abstract and semi-abstract compositions are made using newspapers, hanji, or paper strings. For Choi, the newspaper represents the secular world in which we live. However, he does not believe that this medium gives an accurate interpretation because of the inherent limitations of text language, whose meaning can be easily distorted.
