About this artwork
I still remember the day when I made this work. Originally, I didn't intend to engrave text in my work, but I stopped drawing lines and engraved text messages. It was because I wanted to get out of the emotion that was going around me that day. At that time, I was able to write a diary every day and pour my inner consciousness and emotions into my notebook, which helped me escape from feeling isolated and anxious. I like gray very much, but I think… it's because light and darkness coexist. Someone burned himself and sacrificed himself to remain a warm-hearted ashes. When I put a newspaper dough soaked in water on a canvas and draw a line with iron chopsticks, the fall that falls into a black abyss and the rise that progresses to brightness gives a feeling of deepness. Gray, which is made naturally by mixing ink on paper with each other, means for me to reconstruct the secular world composed of languages into different dimensions on the canvas.
« I am a Korean artist who loves solitude, silence, and contemplation. I do not believe in philosophical realism. I believe that the world lasts only in permanent change. »
Daesun Choi is an artist based in South Korea whose paintings have been widely exhibited nationally, as well as in Japan, the United States, and Germany. His most recent abstract and semi-abstract compositions are made using newspapers, hanji, or paper strings. For Choi, the newspaper represents the secular world in which we live. However, he does not believe that this medium gives an accurate interpretation because of the inherent limitations of text language, whose meaning can be easily distorted.
