About this artwork
Vulnerability is a figurative oil painting of a nude woman sitting on the shore of a calm sea. The sky is overcast and changing colour in the dusk. Her pensive pose gives a sense of her vulnerability and isolation. She is looking into the horizon and one feels the heavy stillness of the world around her.
This sirens oil painting is part of my ‘Sirens’ figure painting series, and was done completely from life and from imagination, without the use… of photography. I first drew a study of the pose with charcoal on paper from a live model before starting the painting.
The painting was built up with many subtle transparent glazes and scumbles in the traditional painting method.
The use of premium quality artist oil paints with large pigment particle size, allows for more of an impasto effect, where the brushstrokes are clearly visible, adding to the overall expressiveness and energy in the painting.

Influenced by Baroque and Renaissance paintings which portray the figurative as well as the landscape, Damian Osborne's works explore the human subject in relation to nature. The South African painter endeavors to capture the feeling reminiscent of youthful dreams and pastoral poems, as a reminder that there is something sacred within all of us. Osborne paints using oils and fabricates his own oil-primed linen or cotton canvases and panels.
