About this artwork
With only a very few known examples of the Paul Outerbridge Jr. iconic image, I was stunned to see this exquisite platinum print in person. It is said to be his first commercial assignment in 1922. He said of it, "I have attempted to interpret the beauty of the simplest and humblest of objects," typical of his approach and elegant photographic compositions.
In the hand of a curator at a Christie's auction preview in 2017, I photographed it. I was… there to support and help with the authentication of photographs for a collector friend of mine. The next day, at the auction, the bidding was intense and he acquired the print for his collection with the highest bid.
When he took possession, we never handled it without gloves. I could never afford to own such an esteemed, valuable piece of art. My photograph, also simple and humble, expresses my memory and joy of sharing the experience with my friend.
As with the original, the actual image is 4×5 - on 8×10 archival paper.
