About this artwork
WHAT WAS HE THINKING?
JANUARY 31, 1959 BUDDY HOLLY — In 1998, he recalled, "...I was three feet away from him, and he looked right at me." OR was he visualizing himself in a black leather jacket, playing a Fender Stratocaster electric guitar, and singing rock 'n' roll to a crowd of "folkies" on a Sunday night in July of 1965? Three nights later, the music died.
JANUARY 26, 1961 GREYSTONE PARK HOSPITAL — Within two days of arriving in NYC, Bob found… Woody Guthrie at a hospital in New Jersey. Back in Minneapolis, "Diamond" Dave Whittaker received a postcard, "I know Woody. I know Woody. I know him and met him and sang to him. I know Woody — Goddamn." Signed, Dylan.
1962 "A HARD RAIN'S A-GONNA FALL" — "Rolling Stone" magazine, "the greatest protest song by the greatest protest songwriter of his time." Dylan, "I crammed my head full of as much of this stuff as I could stand & locked it away in my mind out of sight, and left it alone. Figured I could send a truck back for it later."

About the series:
WHAT WAS HE (Bob Dylan) THINKING?
In 1964, when Bob Dylan sang these first two lines of
I SHALL BE FREE No.10
"I’m just average, common too,
I’m just like him, the same as you"
I wanted to believe him. But I was not just like him. Besides, I couldn’t sing, let alone play guitar. Sixty-five years later, I’m still listening and often still wonder — What Was HE Thinking?
The SQUARE IMAGE TRIPTYCHS highlight moments within Bob Dylan’s career while simply questioning what he was thinking during those situations. (Special configurations (Your choice of any 3) requests accepted).
The RECTANGULAR IMAGES illustrate a song’s lyrics, literally, the way I heard them the first time, straightforward without concern as to what Bob might have meant. It’s all about the visuals. Some reflect a single line or a single verse, while others include imagery for every verse of a song.
