About this artwork
JULY 25, 1965 NEWPORT FOLK FESTIVAL — He intended to perform another solo acoustic set but then made a spontaneous decision. During the noon soundcheck, his crew set up equipment for a 5-piece all-electric band that included Mike Bloomfield and Al Kooper. Bob wore a green and white polka-dot shirt, looking cool and in control.
1965 - 1966 THAT THIN WILD MERCURY SOUND — Dylan said, "The closest I ever got to the sound I hear in my mind was on the… 1966 album BLONDE ON BLONDE. It's that thin, wild mercury sound. It's metallic and bright gold, conjuring up whatever that suggests."
MAY 17, 1966 MANCHESTER, ENGLAND — Someone shouted, "Judas!" Bob responded, "I don’t believe you... You're a liar." He then turned to the band and shouted, "Play it fucking loud!" In Paris, the crowd jeered during the acoustic set, and Dylan told them, "Don't worry, I'm just as eager to finish and leave as you are." Two days later, returned to the US and quit touring for eight years.

About the series:
WHAT WAS HE (Bob Dylan) THINKING?
In 1964, when Bob Dylan sang these first two lines of
I SHALL BE FREE No.10
"I’m just average, common too,
I’m just like him, the same as you"
I wanted to believe him. But I was not just like him. Besides, I couldn’t sing, let alone play guitar. Sixty-five years later, I’m still listening and often still wonder — What Was HE Thinking?
The SQUARE IMAGE TRIPTYCHS highlight moments within Bob Dylan’s career while simply questioning what he was thinking during those situations. (Special configurations (Your choice of any 3) requests accepted).
The RECTANGULAR IMAGES illustrate a song’s lyrics, literally, the way I heard them the first time, straightforward without concern as to what Bob might have meant. It’s all about the visuals. Some reflect a single line or a single verse, while others include imagery for every verse of a song.
