About this artwork
There is a little gem of a painting at the Indianapolis Museum of Art, a portrait by Dutch Renaissance painter, Corneille de Lyon, that served as the basis for the color in this work.
Yellow ochre, burnt umber and diarylide yellow were used for the underpainting–all warm colors–and a warm yellowish-white was employed for the overpainting. In the thicker, more opaque parts, the warm tint is apparent, yet in the more translucent parts, the white… has become a cool, almost lilac color.
