About this artwork
This work illustrates the meeting between Dante and the young Matelda, of noble and beautiful appearance, who while singing is intent on picking flowers, along the banks of the river Lethe. Immersed in a pine forest, surrounded by red and yellow flowers, the two meet at the river of oblivion, the Lethe, because its waters make the souls who immerse themselves in it (and Dante will have to do so) forget the evils committed.
