‘Writing Joyce’ is a very thinking Joyce, painting of just his head and neck based on the statue in The Merrion Hotel Dublin. In the courtyard of the hotel, there is a sundial with a six-foot Joyce with a cane. Joyce himself as the gnomon ('one that knows or examines' in Greek), or pointer. My motivation for this project is to celebrate Joyce by introducing colour into his otherwise early twentieth century back and white portraits. I wanted to bring…
his colourful writings and life into his portraits, adding possibly the personalities of Joyce’s Dublin.
I felt inspired to use the colours Joyce used in his imagery of Ireland and his ideas to influence my Joyce portraits and paintings, to bring our ‘faded images of Joyce back to life’.

Many of Nowlan's works are an exploration of colors and shades in order to capture a particular mood or moment. He creates using oils on canvas and wood.
