About this artwork
Starting ‘Become River’ in early April, just as the pandemic was forcing shut-downs across America, David Sheldon found the painting to be a challenge and a solice in difficult times. Trekking down into the Green River Gorge Narrows became a sanctuary of sorts for the artist. Difficult to reach, he would have the whole place to himself. Consider himself ‘an action painter who does landscapes’, this challenging piece inspired by the gorge was just…
what the artist needed to address the current turbulent situation in all our lives. It is River as metaphor for Life, with its twists and turns, gentle passages, as well as its more turbulent, troubling waters. Accepting, without judgement, Life’s various passages is the key to serenity and peace of mind in difficult times ‘finding the light’ can sometimes be a difficult challenge. For landscape painter, David Sheldon, looking to Nature has been his source for not only inspiration, but a means to connect with ‘something greater’.

« My goals in art-making are exploring the nature of who I am, and my relationship to the world. »
At age nine, American painter and sculptor David Sheldon was hospital bound after a major operation and was given his first oil-painting kit- he hasn't stopped making art since. The theme of Sheldon's sculpture work revolves around the question, "Who am I, and what is my relationship to the Infinite?" Regarding his paintings, Sheldon works intuitively, and likes to constantly question his methods. Sheldon't futuristic steel sculptures and abstract expressionist oil paintings are fluid, bright, and intriguing.
