About this artwork
Notre-Dame de Paris, referred to simply as Notre-Dame, is a medieval Catholic cathedral on the Île de la Cité in the 4th arrondissement of Paris. The cathedral is consecrated to the Virgin Mary and considered to be one of the finest examples of French Gothic architecture. The church has a 13th century Rose window – which was removed during the Second World War for fear of Nazi vandalism or looting. Notre Dame is renowned for its rib vaulting, flying…
buttresses and stunning stained glass windows, as well as its many carved stone gargoyles. Notre-Dame Cathedral suffered damage and deterioration through the centuries. After the French Revolution it was rescued from possible destruction by Napoleon, who crowned himself emperor of the French in the cathedral in 1804. During a restoration campaign in 2019, a fire broke out in the cathedral’s attic, and the massive blaze destroyed most of the roof, Viollet-le-Duc’s 19th-century spire, and some of the rib vaulting.

David Tomlin is an exciting Canadian painter who has exhibited his work nationally, including in the US, Canada and France. Self-taught and creating from a signature Canadian perspective, he composes surreal, vibrant paintings that exalt natural light and colour. He is influenced by Impressionism, and more profoundly by Canadian First Nations artists in their representations of humanity's relationship to the natural world. Tomlin's semi-abstract style showcases purpose, intensity and an energizing visual flourish. Together with a love of colour and a passion for design, Tomlin's paintings evoke a sense of contemplative spirituality expressing his understanding of the three ‘transcendentals’- BEAUTY, GOODNESS, and TRUTH.
