About this artwork
What separates humans from animals is our ability to contemplate our own existence. No more is this true than in moments of solitude, when we engage in silent contemplation and self-reflection.
This image of a young man walking alone through an alleyway, away from his otherwise noisy, crowded and cluttered urban life, underscores what it is that truly makes us human. The mood is melancholy, but not sad. Solitude does not imply the feeling of loneliness.… It is when and where we find answers to our very human questions.
My process is to photograph my source images, e.g. street scenes, intriguing textures, and my own paintings, and then utilize software such as Photoshop in a series of creative steps to layer, collage, merge, enhance, recolour, paint and otherwise transform the multiple photos into a single digital artwork that corresponds with my vision.
The work is then dye sublimation printed on aluminum, mounted on a black flush frame, and arrives ready to hang.
« My goal is to create a compelling and dynamic image that resonates in the viewer, stated in as few brush strokes as necessary »
David Tycho is a prize-winning Canadian artist whose paintings have been widely exhibited on a national level, as well as in the United States, Switzerland, Belgium, and Singapore. His art is distinguished by the exploration of varying subjects and differing artistic approaches. Inspired to create from nature, urban expansion, and the people he encounters, Tycho translates these influences onto canvas in an improvisational, expressive, and abstract manner. He paints using acrylics with brushes, palette knives, trowels, sticks, and rollers.
