About this artwork
PAINTED BY 8 TOYISTS ONE WHOLE YEAR - From behind the windows of the buildings, we observed people staying indoors, while the animals ventured out to celebrate. For instance, a fox sat on a bench sipping coffee, and a mother tapir led her baby to the supermarket for shopping. Further ahead, two panda lovers enjoyed a hot pot meal, while another panda family snapped selfies for their travel album. On a terrace, two bears relaxed with beers in hand.… The Portuguese rooster crowed proudly in the background. The animals, eager to explore the world, dreamed of wearing wooden shoes as they visited iconic landmarks like the Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy, the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the ancient temples of Greece, or the windmills of Holland. Among them was an Australian farmer attempting to recapture a mother kangaroo, her babies peeking out from her pouch. Nearby, an owl, just awakened from its slumber, observed the lively carnival and remarked, "You've disturbed my sweet dream."
Toyist Dejo is the visionary artist and founder of the influential, international art movement Toyism. As a versatile artist, active as both a painter and printmaker, he forges a remarkable synthesis in his work and life path between rigorous academic training, a profound fascination with world cultures, and sharp business acumen. This unique combination of qualities enabled him to bring Toyism to life: a vibrant, collaborative movement that breaks through the boundaries of individual authorship. Toyist's oeuvre is distinguished by exceptional craftsmanship, an explosive yet deliberate color palette, and a wealth of narrative symbolism. His visual language, seemingly playful and accessible, serves as a conduit for complex themes: the search for identity in a globalized world, the universal human condition, and the tension between childlike wonder and adult awareness. Aesthetic pleasure is never superficial; it is the carrier of meaning.
