About this artwork
This painting depicts a soucougnan, a fascinating and frightening creature from Guadeloupean folklore. In Guadeloupean Creole, its name is "soukounyan".
At nightfall, she performs a magical ritual to remove her human skin and transform herself into a ball of fire. She places her skin on a Ceiba pentandra, a large, sacred, thorny tree, before taking flight. According to legend, it sucks the blood of its victims, like a vampire, before taking human… form again as dawn approaches.
However, this fearsome predator has a weakness: it cannot recover its skin if it is seasoned.
This painting, vibrant with colors and history, is much more than a simple work of art: it is a door to a magical and legendary universe. An ideal piece for collectors passionate about the mythical creatures of the world or for anyone wishing to add a touch of mystery and Caribbean culture to their interior.
