I have thought a lot about black Americans like me, there is a quote that says: "To be African American is to be African without any memory and American without any privilege."
I've been told these sands are not native to Namibia. And a long time ago the dunes disappeared, and the sand went towards the sea...only… to return later and reform the dunes.
I was made to believe that I am neither American nor African. Yet after traveling for years, I've never felt as strong as in Africa. The place where I'm not a minority. Where I'm surrounded by a familiar color: black. In going elsewhere after my very last trip to Africa, and having lost my power, Nita (my mother), I returned. It was home; I felt home, like the very last time I was there with her... It's as though we were connected again at last, to make me stronger, like the dunes of Namibia.
