About this artwork
I've always found it incredible to live in a time when you can listen to music whenever and wherever you want. A century ago, there were no music recordings; music was only shared when musicians performed live.
When I was little, I had cassette tapes of children's stories that I played in my little radio. Then came the era of portable music players. Cassette players on which you could record radio broadcasts, CD players that you took everywhere… with your case of burned CDs. And finally, the holy grail of portable music: the MP3 player…
The pinnacle of this era was marked by the arrival of the iPod. "1000 songs in your pocket" was Steve Jobs's catchphrase. It was the ultimate technological marvel for carrying our music with us. A beautiful, practical, and easy-to-use object. "Art and creativity at the crossroads of technology," as Walter Isaacson put it.
Denis Verdier's work initially revolved around a recurring theme: flowering blue cacti rooted in antique vases. An outsider in the plant world, the cactus intrigues with its contrasting spines and flowers. Thanks to its anatomy, it is able to survive in hostile deserts. Thus, the artist identifies with its unique capacity for adaptation. Coming from a background where art wasn't a given, Denis Verdier always felt out of step with established norms (as exemplified by antique vases). He found in the cactus an echo of his own journey: that of a being who adapts, evolves, and ultimately flourishes. The color blue, omnipresent in his work, brings a note of serenity. It represents a gentle adaptation in a noisy era. Beyond his personal history, his works question the place of the human in a society under tension, wishing to highlight a nature that persists where technology overflows.
