About this artwork
This work was created for a group exhibition of painting and crafts. Inspired by the Marion Tuu'luq tribute exhibition at the National Gallery of Canada (2003), it expresses my connection to the lakes and my respect for Indigenous and Inuit peoples. Working with linen, felt, and embroidery led me to emphasize line and form, highlighting the fibers and the figures of the loon and the swimmer. The tapestry is sewn onto the canvas and embellished with… loon feathers. The water in the tapestry is treated conceptually, while the water painted on the canvas reflects the colours of several lakes in Quebec.
Denise Levesque, a painter and graduate in visual arts from the University of Ottawa, primarily works with acrylics on canvas. She adopts a stylized figurative style, favoring blurred outlines, light, and a subtle conceptual touch, elaborating on the mystery and atmosphere of landscapes. Her works convey a profound sense of serenity and wonder, inviting meditation on nature and the balance between the material and the spiritual.
