About this artwork
I envisioned creating an abstract-expressionist piece where each mark and splatter offers a glimpse into the tumultuous human condition. The short days and long nights of winter this northern latitude, have always been a time of reflection and reverence to who we are as a people and why we are here on earth. We suddenly become aware of the importance of light simply because we, for a few months, are denied unlimited access to it. Hence, we are called…
by it's scarcity and its warmth. Most cultures, and almost all religions use symbols of light to exemplify their beliefs. Chanukah's candles light the darkness of the night....the ninth candle. In this vivid swirl of chaos and cosmos, I channeled raw emotion through acrylic and collage. The explosive colors capture the tempest of feelings that were almost palpable as I painted - joy, turmoil, passion, and relief.

« I paint and create because it is the essence that feeds my soul and makes me joyous. Painting is the way I believe I am able to contribute to the betterment of the world at large. »
Dianna Cates Dunn is an American artist who describes herself as an abstract layerist. She believes that the creation of art and the viewing of art form a relationship. For Dunn, relationships are the essence of the human condition. Through the illumination of small emotions, intimate feelings, joyous hope and forsaken yearnings, her work strives to allow "tender memories to be stirred and inner connections to be made". She creates using acrylics and collage on canvas or wood.
