About this artwork
As well as in "The Innocence of a gaze", this portrait explores the 'elusive gaze,' of a boy carrying the Fragile X Syndrome. Using a restricted palette and bold alla prima strokes, I tried to capture my son's essence as a teenager. The bluried greenish background delivers deep light and creates the glow of his face, while his eyes—avoiding a direct encounter—invite the viewer into a world of reflection. It is an invitation to see beyond the visible,… to embrace the beauty of a mind that operates on a sensitive frequency. For me, as it happened with my daugther, this painting represents the moment I stopped looking for answers and started simply looking at him."
The painting is set into a frame made of painted or stained pine wood. I made it by hand myself to make it easier to display.
Diego Cuéllar is a painter who discovered his passion later in life, intuitively transitioning from a management background and highly influenced by his family's artistic legacy. He employs Figurative Realism with Impressionist flair, using the "alla prima" technique and painting directly onto canvas or wood without prior sketches, focusing on light and contrast to reveal her subjects' essence. His evocative works explore neurodiversity and the quiet dignity of Fragile X Syndrome, capturing fleeting inner moments; his art radiates authenticity, resilience, and a profound beauty drawn from the vulnerability and strength of the human condition. As a father of two children diagnosed with Fragile X Syndrome, Diego underwent a radical personal and professional transformation. This journey led him to author "Beneath the Same Sky", a book that deconstructs the traditional definitions of success and explores the resilience found within human fragility.
