About this artwork
Beneath its apparent graphic lightness, BISTRO questions the persistence of the Warholian myth in a world saturated with images and brands. By substituting the word BRILLO with BISTRO, the artist transposes the icon of American Pop Art into a more familiar, popular, and ironic European culture.
The work questions the commodification of art and the hypnotic power of packaging: what remains of Warhol's initial critique, when advertising brilliance… becomes our permanent mental landscape?
BISTRO reactivates the tension between visual seduction and emptiness of meaning, between homage and disenchantment.
The gesture, both conceptual and pictorial, places painting in a critical field: that of a contemporary look at consumption, repetition and the illusion of the “new”.

« "I am a contemplative artist from our world." »
Stephane Dillies’ paintings have been internationally exhibited, from France to Qatar. The artist, who lives and works in Brussels, takes photographs of trash he finds around the world and transforms them into paintings. The pieces are entitled using the GPS coordinates of the garbage. Oriented towards images of chaos, his art reflects modern landscapes which reveal the futility of society. A figurative painter, he also creates abstract works using oils and acrylics with successive layers of glazes.
