About this artwork
This painting belongs to my ongoing series exploring the cycles of life. Here, black nearly consumes the canvas — thick, glossy ridges of oil paint twisting and overlapping like burnt branches or tangled roots, leaving only fragments of deep cobalt blue to break through beneath. The blue doesn’t dominate; it survives, glowing faintly through the density of black like light at the bottom of very deep water.
I worked this piece almost entirely in… monochrome, letting the sculptural texture of the paint itself carry the composition rather than color. Every ridge and groove catches the light differently depending on where you stand, so the painting shifts and reveals new structure as you move around it.
For me, this work is about the moments of near-total darkness within a life cycle — the periods that feel consumed by shadow — and the quiet, persistent light that still moves underneath

Dmitry Suhov is a Paris-based painter and ceramicist, originally from Siberia, Russia, exploring life cycles through oil paintings, ceramic sculptures, and hybrid objects that unite both mediums. His technique bridges painting and ceramics, with textured, layered oil compositions and sculptural forms crafted from clay, glazes, and precious metals, blending raw materiality with refined finishes. His work invites viewers to reflect on impermanence, transformation, and renewal, capturing the dynamic tension between chaos and form with deeply evocative, elemental energy.
