About this artwork
Red Irises’ is part of my ongoing series exploring the cycles of life. The canvas is divided between two worlds — an emerald, verdant undergrowth on the left and a deep, nocturnal blue on the right — as if day and night, growth and stillness, were caught in the same frame. Red irises rise throughout, like small flames or wounds, threading the composition together from top to bottom.
Dark, vine-like lines run vertically through the whole piece, holding… the tangled vegetation in place the way roots hold soil. I build the surface with a palette knife, layering the paint thickly and intuitively, letting the color find its own density and rhythm rather than planning the image in advance.
For me, this painting is about the coexistence of opposites — the lush and the shadowed, warmth and depth, life pushing upward even in near-darkness.

Dmitry Suhov is a Paris-based painter and ceramicist, originally from Siberia, Russia, exploring life cycles through oil paintings, ceramic sculptures, and hybrid objects that unite both mediums. His technique bridges painting and ceramics, with textured, layered oil compositions and sculptural forms crafted from clay, glazes, and precious metals, blending raw materiality with refined finishes. His work invites viewers to reflect on impermanence, transformation, and renewal, capturing the dynamic tension between chaos and form with deeply evocative, elemental energy.
